^ Spring Trends and how to adapt your wardrobe (i.e. not buy loads of new stuff!)
I love the start of a new season. Spring has to be my favourite – the promise of warmer weather, blossom on the trees, longer evenings.
I start to put away my heavy knits and coats and bring out my lighter pieces of clothing. Every new season the Fashion industry declares the new trends and tries to persuade us to buy some new stuff. Whilst I like to see what is going to be around in the shops, I am not a fan of buying loads of new items. Instead, I like to see how I can adapt existing pieces I own to reflect some of the ideas from the catwalk. I might buy a few second-hand items usually accessories or maybe a key piece from one of my local boutiques to support their small businesses.
Here are a few pointers about this season’s trends and my tips for how you can get on board in a more sustainable way and enjoy your clothes as well!
Colours – key colours for this season are avocado and blush pink. Mocha and light beiges are still around too. My advice with colour trends unless you are a HUGE fan of those colours is to look out for some accessories to complement existing outfits.
I spotted some light green and light pink coloured bags in my local charity shops plus jewellery too. Simply mix with jeans and a t-shirt, a denim dress etc to join in with the colour trends this season.
Boho - the catwalks were full of head to toe boho looks but this trend is super easy to blend into your wardrobe. Think about elements such as embroidery, beads and fringing, patterned bags and lace details. Vintage embroidered tops are always around second hand as are wooden beads and necklaces and statement belts. Pair your holiday kaftan with your jeans and add some beads for a take on this trend. Look out for tassel details on bags and sheer and lace pieces.
Elevated leisure – this is all about dressing up a piece of clothing you would wear to your workout class and mixing it with smarter pieces. Think about layering hoodies under leather jackets, trench coats and blazers. Adding sparkly jewellery to sweatshirts or wearing heels or fancy flats with your tracksuit!
Preppy/coastal cool – if you have a Breton stripe top in your wardrobe you are pretty much sorted for this trend think about wearing it with some loose wide leg trousers for a take on this look. V neck cricket style sweaters over collared shirts are another easy option.
Ladies who lunch – sharp chanel style skirt suits featured on the catwalks with pearl jewellery and brooches think old style glamour. A key piece you can always find second hand is the tweed chanel style jacket. It is a lovely item to invest in as this trend comes around pretty much every year and they are easy to wear with your jeans and smart trousers. You could also get some pearl jewellery and wear with spring florals, layer brooches on the lapels of your blazers and denim jacket.
Other accessories to look out for this season are charms on keyrings, necklaces. Silk scarves - wear them around your neck, loop around bag handles or around your jeans as a belt.
Fruity pieces – I have noticed a lot of fruit themed clothing and accessories. 1 new piece I have invested in this season is a cherry print t shirt from a local boutique which I will wear with my floral and tulle skirts, jeans etc. Look out for lemons, oranges and strawberries too!
I hope you feel excited about refreshing your wardrobe for spring!
